What is Complex Regional Pain Syndrome?
Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS), formerly known as reflex sympathetic dystrophy syndrome (RSD), is a chronic pain condition that usually affects an arm or leg. It causes intense pain, swelling and changes in skin color and temperature of the affected body part.
Causes of CRPS
CRPS often develops after an injury, surgery or stroke. It can be triggered by fractures, sprains, heart attacks or strokes. In some cases, no obvious injury or cause can be identified. The exact cause is still unknown but it likely involves abnormal processing of pain signals in the central and peripheral nervous systems.
Symptoms of CRPS
The main symptoms of CRPS include:
- Persistent severe burning pain
- Swelling
- Changes in skin color or texture
- Abnormal sweating patterns
- Stiffness and limited movement of the affected arm or leg
Treatment for CRPS
The goals of treatment are to reduce pain and improve function. A multidisciplinary treatment approach is usually recommended, involving medications, physical therapy, nerve blocks, and in some cases surgery.
